Disclaimer: Square does not offer a built in or separately billed “Cash Discount Program” at a fixed 4% rate. 

Instead, Square allows merchants to create their own cash discount or dual pricing structure within its POS by adjusting item prices and applying a manual discount when customers pay with cash. 

Square clearly presents this as a merchant managed pricing strategy and NOT a native Square offering. 


PART I: How 4% Compliant Cash Discounting Works With Square

•    The posted price is the credit card price, which already includes processing costs.

•    Customers who pay with cash qualify for a 4% discount at checkout (manually applied by staff).

•    Customers paying with credit or debit cards pay the full posted "Regular" price.


PART II:  Processing Fees Still Apply

Square still charges its standard processing fees on card transactions. The savings come from the price structure, not from Square waiving fees.

•    MCC specific passthough applies + our Schedule A Cost (not rack rates) 

•    No Square processing fees apply to cash payments


PART III: Keeping Square Merchants Compliant

•    Cash discounting is legal in all 50 U.S. states

•    The key piece to remember: The higher price MUST be the posted price, There is no Dual-Price solution presently. This is NOT a fee added to cards, that would be the Square Surcharge program. 


Signage is NOT required for a true cash discount program but recommended to alert patrons that they can save when paying with cash.
