Square’s pricing is simple and transparent—but the real cost per transaction is higher than the “rack rate” suggests once you include fixed per-transaction fees.

Are Square Fees Really 2.5%–2.9%?

(or will Your Prospects Effective Rate be Closer to 4%)

The Math Behind the Marketing Rate

Square (like most flat-rate providers) charges two components on every card sale: a percentage of the sale amount plus a fixed per-transaction fee (for example, 2.5% + 15¢ in person, 2.9% + 30¢ online, 3.5% + 30¢ card on file or manually key entered) - See table below.

To understand what you will actually pay, you need to calculate the effective rate:

          Your Effective Rate =

Percentage Rate + ( Per Transaction Fee / Transaction Amount )

Real examples using Square's "Plus" Plan (+$49/month) Pricing:

    • In-person: 2.5% + 0.15

      • $10 ticket → 0.15 / 10 = 1.50% + 2.6% → effective cost ≈ 4.10%

      • $30 ticket → 0.15 / 30 = 0.50% + 2.6% → effective cost ≈ 3.10%

      • $50 ticket → 0.15 / 50 = 0.30% + 2.6% → effective cost ≈ 2.90%

    • Online, API (Apps): 2.9% + 0.30

      • $10 ticket → 0.30 / 10 = 3.00% + 2.9% → effective cost ≈ 5.90%

      • $30 ticket → 0.30 / 30 = 1.00% + 2.9% → effective cost ≈ 3.90%

      • $50 ticket → 0.30 / 50 = 0.60% + 2.9% → effective cost ≈ 3.50%

    • Card on File, Recurring: 3.5% + 0.30

      • $10 ticket → 0.30 / 10 = 3.00% + 3.5% → effective cost ≈ 6.50%

      • $30 ticket → 0.30 / 30 = 1.00% + 3.5% → effective cost ≈ 4.50%

    • $50 ticket → 0.30 / 50 = 0.60% + 3.5% → effective cost ≈ 4.10%

Now let's blend just in-store & online together ...

The Take-away

For many small-ticket or mixed-ticket businesses, the real processing cost lands between roughly 3% and 6%, not the 2.5%–2.9% “headline” number.

Why That Matters for Your Bottom Line

  • Your fees rise as your ticket size falls, even though the percentage rate remains the same.

  • The “flat rate” you see on the website is not the rate you actually experience on your statement.

  • As your volume grows, the simplicity of flat-rate pricing becomes a “simplicity tax” you quietly pay every month.

A Compliant 4% Cash Discount Program

Instead of silently absorbing effective rates that often approach or exceed 4%, many Square sellers are moving to a compliant 4% cash discount program that:

  • Builds the cost of card acceptance into your posted prices.

  • Discounts up to 4% for customers who pay with cash or other eligible methods.

  • Reduces or nearly eliminates your net card processing expense, while keeping pricing transparent and predictable.
