Gateway: Authorize.net
Core strength:
Widely recognized general-purpose gateway
Key advantages:
Mature APIs and ecosystem; supports cards, ACH/eCheck, PayPal, Apple Pay, Google Pay, recurring billing, tokenization, fraud tools, and many shopping-cart/POS integrations
Potential liabilities / cautions:
Standard direct pricing adds a $25 setup fee, $20 monthly gateway fee plus .05 transaction fees; less flexible for unusual/high-risk or complex multi-processor routing; feature set can feel dated compared with newer orchestration platforms
Best fit:
Standard e-commerce, invoicing, subscription, and SMB use cases where a well-known gateway and broad third-party compatibility matter most
Authorize.net: safe default, but not always lowest-cost
Authorize.net is often the simplest choice when a merchant needs a broadly compatible gateway for an online store, payment links, recurring billing, invoicing, or standard ACH/card acceptance. It supports major cards, PayPal, Apple Pay, Google Pay, and eCheck/ACH, and its ecosystem is large enough that many carts, CRMs, and billing tools already support it.
The trade-off is cost and flexibility. Its published Gateway Only plan is $25/month plus 10¢ per transaction and a 10¢ daily batch fee; the all-in-one plan is $25/month plus 2.9% + 30¢ per transaction. It is reliable for mainstream use cases, but it is usually not the best option when the merchant needs multi-processor routing, high-risk specialization, advanced payment orchestration, or an ISO-controlled white-label model.
Use it when: familiarity, compatibility, and a proven standard matter more than modern payment orchestration or reseller control.
